Year: 2018
Overview:
Music festivals are a growing trend among young adults. With the increase in popularity the way we consume and experience music changes.
In this academic project I explore the festival culture, consumption of music and attempt to change how music can be experienced through the sense of sight. All while trying to translate this unique experience through various mediums.
Deliverables:
design a festival experience
app design (home page, AR, logo)
promotional material (magazine cover and spread)
Problem:
How might we make a unique festival experience, that can be translated through various mediums like print and mobile?
Research Methods:
desk research
user interviews
concept testing
Some Questions:
what is disruption?
what aspects of music festival are disruptive?
what are the social implications of music festival
How do we experience music?
Insights:
Many people enjoy a music festival as they feel like being there makes them part of something bigger
Most festivals make people forget about their daily lives and take them to a new world of enjoyment
Key Learnings:
Music festivals are a cultural norm and increasing in popularity
Music affects people’s moods
Music is experienced by senses such as sound and touch
Designing the Festival Experince:
Other details:
five performing artists whom are proficient in immersive technologies and sound, they strive in their art form to bring the audience into the experience
Each artist is known for different strengths, for example, Max Cooper is known for 4D sound and having the ability to control sound in a physical space. Whereas, Doron Sadja is known for his art form as being post human hyper-emotive as he experiments with digital sound, light, and space.
The festival is built on an immersive element and each artist caters to this core belief. Through the concept and performers, the festival will offer the participants to be immersed and transcended into a new world of sound.
Research to Idea:
Based on research, I saw that music festivals were an immersive experience. In order to further disrupt the festival experience and immerse the audience, I wanted to include their sense of sight in experiencing music. Allowing the user to see, hear, and feel the music around them.
Idea to Concept:
The Disruption Music Festival is an immersive experience which is unique and somewhat nostalgic. It will allow the participants to transcend into a childlike awe, wonder, and curiosity, to forgo their reality and responsibilities, and to be captivated by the new world around them.
Designing the App:
Concept:
The app and the augmented reality were designed based on the festival concept and colour themes from branding seen in the typographic logo.
Portion 1 - landing page
In an age where personalization is highly regarded, the app offers this to its users. The three buttons on the bottom of the screen (Disruption Guide, Find My Tent, Help) change their size based on the user's patterns of use. The button they press more frequently is larger whereas the button they press less frequently is smaller. This portion of the app makes it interactive with the user and playful. It also offers a live stream of the event and upcoming performance times on the top half of the screen.
Portion 2 - unique experience
The augmented reality portion of the app is meant to further immerse the audience. The disruption guide will overlay what the sound looks like in a 4D space based on Max Cooper's software system. This gives the user the opportunity to walk around and interact with the different sounds in the space around them. The shape of the sound will appear along with the name of what it is. Additionally, to give the augmented reality more functionality and duality, it will help the user locate their tent by showcasing the tent icon, an arrow, and the distance they are away from their tent.

Designing the magazine cover and spread:
Print materials that bring to life the Disruption festival experience
Goal:
Showcase the festival experience and the featured artist Max Coopers 4D sound.
Magazine Spread Design Rationale:
The illustrations of various triangles extend from Max Coopers 4D sound, the triangles were taken from a rendering of what sound looks like in a physical space. Images of Max Cooper that have been altered to be duotone are featured on both the cover and spread to add information, impact, and curiosity.
Magazine Cover Design Rationale:
The cover was designed to entice the eye and lead it on a visual journey. The triangles at the top of he triangles at the top of the page draw the eye to the image, then the information and names. The careful placement of illustrations, images, and typography create a impactful cover. The spread was also designed carefully to take the eye on the journey. The grid system and layout lend itself to carry the eye from the image to the title to the articles, delivering all the necessary information in a fun and playful way.
What I did:
I designed how sound can be experienced at a music festival through introducing the sense of sight. This was done through developing a AR concept that would show festival goers how the sounds in the song looked like in the space around them.
